Q: Introduce yourself: what’s your name, age, where are you from, where do you currently live?

Fidele: I am Fidele Wabenga, a 27-year-old Congolese changemaker, freelance filmmaker, and proud refugee. My life's purpose revolves around sharing the compelling stories of refugees, using my skills to make a positive impact and amplify the voices of those who often go unheard.

Q: You've been a part of the Kakuma story for a while now. Can you share a bit about your journey—where are you originally from and how long have you called Kakuma home?

Fidele: With a decade of experience, I have dedicated my professional journey to humanitarian work within the challenging environment of Kakuma Refugee Camp. Originating from the Democratic Republic of Congo, my expertise lies in managing and contributing to various refugee projects.

My commitment to this field is driven by a profound motivation to make a positive impact on the lives of those affected by displacement, leveraging my skills to address the complex challenges within the humanitarian landscape. I call Kakuma home because is the place that has taught me life.

 Q: What is your favorite thing about Kakuma refugee camp, and what do you miss the most about your hometown or country?

Fidele: To me, Kakuma Refugee Camp is more than just a place—it's my 'University of Life.' It serves as a profound teacher, imparting invaluable lessons through life experiences. Despite being far from my birthplace, I cannot forget my home country, as it will forever remain the place where I first opened my eyes to the world.

Q: Can you share a bit about your background and how you got involved in videography/photography?

Fidele: I'm a filmmaker with skills and experience as a videographer, photographer, producer in sound, directing and acting in social media as content creator. I know how to use lots of film software and cameras.

I am eager to contribute my experiences and abilities in helping organizations achieve its mission and goals. I also have experience in working with many organizations and experience working with children and people with disabilities here in Kakuma Refugee camp.

I take great pride in being Fidele Wabenga, grateful for the opportunities to contribute my skills within the realm of humanitarian work.

 Q: Your videography skills are impressive.  Where did you pick up these incredible skills? Was it a passion that found you, or did you actively seek it out?

Fidele: My proficiency in videography has garnered appreciation, particularly within the humanitarian sector. I initially acquired these skills through the guidance of my mentor, Batakane, who is currently residing in Australia.

His introduction to videography inspired me to delve deeper into the craft. I furthered my knowledge by actively researching and watching tutorials on social media, enhancing my skills day by day. Looking ahead, I am eager to collaborate and learn from experienced professional videographers outside of Africa to broaden my expertise.

 Q: Which year did you start Season of the Time Media and how did you start this business/company?

Fidele: In 2012, we founded Season of the Time Media Productions with the objective of amplifying the voices of refugees globally. Recognizing that many refugees face challenges in having their voices heard due to circumstances such as war and insecurity, and acknowledging the untapped talents within our community, I was inspired to make a difference.

Upon interacting with fellow refugees and understanding their struggles, I resolved to establish a tuition-free learning center. The primary goal of this center is to empower refugees by providing them with valuable training and skills.

By doing so, I aim to contribute to the well-being of their families and future generations, recognizing the transformative impact education and skills development can have on individuals and communities.

 Q: Crafting documentaries and training the next generation of media enthusiasts—what drives your passion for this work? What's the one thing you absolutely love about what you do?

Fidele: My project's passion lies in fostering a sense of empowerment and resilience within the refugee community. By amplifying their voices through media production and providing them with education and skills, I'm not just addressing immediate challenges but sowing the seeds for a more hopeful future.

The passion for this project for the next generation lies in the belief that every individual, regardless of their circumstances, has the potential to contribute positively to society when given the right opportunities and support. It's about creating a legacy of education, skills, and empowerment that transcends generations, inspiring others to embrace the transformative power of knowledge and creativity.

 Q: How did you join the Creative Gateway team?

Fidele: I became a part of the Gateway team with a profound connection to the refugee experience, viewing it as a shared journey. This platform not only entrusted me with the opportunity to showcase my own talents and skills but also empowered fellow refugees by imparting essential skills. Moreover, it extends the privilege of global exposure, enabling us to market and share our talents with a broader audience.

 Q: Do you think the Creative Gateway program is doing good work in Kakuma?

Fidele: The Gateway project in Kakuma Refugee Camp serves as a transformative avenue, offering refugees like us unparalleled opportunities for empowerment through digital literacy training , an unprecedented initiative within refugee camps. This endeavor not only equips us with essential skills but also opens doors for the exploration of our talents, creating a pathway to diverse work opportunities on a global scale

 Q: How has your family or community reacted to your involvement with Creative Gateway, and what kind of support do they provide?

Fidele: The Gateway projects have become a source of immense pride for my family and community. As young refugees, it provides us with a platform to express our capabilities and, importantly, grants us the invaluable opportunity for free education. This not only fosters personal growth but also contributes to the collective empowerment of our community.

 Q: If you could tell everyone one thing about refugees, what would it be?

Fidele: I wish to convey to those who perceive refugees merely as a label, that being called a 'refugee' is not an inherent characteristic but a consequence of challenging circumstances. We are individuals with talents, aspirations, and dreams, much like anyone else. The term 'refugee' does not define us; it is merely a temporary status imposed by circumstances, reminding us that we share common humanity and that, under different circumstances, anyone could

 Q: How do you see yourself contributing to the growth and development of Kakuma in the years to come?

Fidele: In the years to come, I envision myself becoming a significant bridge amplifying the voices of refugees worldwide. Through dedicated efforts, I aspire to facilitate opportunities for refugees to be heard, understood, and valued on a global scale.

 Q: How do you unwind or relax after a busy day of work and other responsibilities?

Fidele: After a busy day, I prioritize taking time for meaningful conversations with my family and meeting new friends to share and hear new stories. It's a rejuvenating practice that adds richness to my life beyond the demands of a hectic day.
